Julian Burnside QC, the Melbourne-based commercial barrister who is known internationally for his human rights work, addressed 30 members and guests at a roundtable FCA Newsmaker Luncheon on Friday 22 August 2008 in the Jumbunna Room at the NSW Trade & Investment Centre in Sydney.
The event was held in commemoration of this 60th Anniversary of the International Declaration of Human Rights and the title of Julian Burnside's address was "Australia: can do better".
Subjects covered by Mr Burnside and in the Q&A that followed, included Australia's Stolen Generations, incommunicado and other detention, terrorism and security legislation, the Refugee Tribunal, common law, Guantanamo Bay and the important differences between a Constitutional Bill of Rights and a Statutory Bill of Rights.
