A JEWEL IN THE CROWN - NAPIER
By Agneta Didrikson

Agneta Didrikson of Sweden´s Dagens Industri takes you on a wine, food and art trail through the Hawke´s Bay and the jewel in its crown - Napier.

Follow the wine trail! Or the food trail! Or why not the art trail? Next time you go to New Zealand - don?t forget to visit Hawkes Bay and the jewel in that crown - Napier. Whether you go for work or just pleasure - this is not to be missed.

Hawkes Bay - the oldest wine region in New Zealand - has embarked on a great campaign. The wine-, food- and art industries have gone together to make the time spent in the region more interesting. There are 36 (!) vineyards in the region and they are so close together that you could bike between them. And there is a place to rent the bikes as well.

On yer bike Winery tours, not far from Sileni´s new and fashionable winery, is the place to start if you want to bike between six wineries. For 40 dollars you get the bike and a lunch and a map and off you go! If you get tired you can phone "home" and they will come and pick you up. Hawkes Bay is also an agricultural powerhouse and the Farmers´ Market (with only growers present) is a delight at the Hastings Showground on Sundays.

If you want to fill your soul - and maybe empty your wallet - between eating and drinking you should follow the art trail and visit some of the local artists - the region has everyting you can think of. From painters and sculptors to furniture designers and jewelry makers. Musicians, authors, textile artists and a few museums.

Best of all - an Art Deco Walk through Napier, one of the world´s best kept art deco cities. There are so many of the old houses from 1931 still in beautiful shape. There are residential areas dedicated to the period and there is even a Mac Donalds in fantastic art deco decor.

Even if you´re not writing an article about Napier - which I think every journalist in this region should do as the story is so good - a private stroll is also nice!

The people at New Zealand Tourism are very helpful if you plan a trip to our closest neighbour.
